Wapanese: Real or fiction?
Okay, due to too much thinking time at work I began wondering: Wapanese, is it real or a word of pure fiction? What I mean is, are there truly Wapanese among us? This following “report” is using Wikipedia as a source for the definition of “Wapanese” people. (Link to definition)

Anime obsessed, Japan obsessed, Japanese language obsessed.. I’m sure you’ve seen at least one person in your life who has one of these, if not all of these, symptoms. It’s not uncommon, especially if you’re into Anime yourself or J-rock (Japanese rock). These are three aspects of the supposed "Wapanese". I’ll like to cover these three main aspects first before going down a list with explanations.
Being a former anime addict, I understand how addicting these cartoons can be. They’re hard to quit on a dime and are more expensive to keep up with than car payments or even feeding you cat! Though you can go through it and only watch certain anime after a while (like I do now). Liking these cartoons is not bad, it’s good even. The art is usually much more unique and detailed than American cartoons, but that doesn’t mean American cartoons are bad! Never mistake that. These anime obsessed people have just lost their way and don’t recall the good days where Sunday mornings had you jumping up to watch Rugrats or Doug. I’m sure if they look back, or truly sit down and watch some cartoons, they’ll change their mind on how “crappy” USA cartoons really are.
Being interested in Japan isn’t a crime! It’s not stupid to want to learn about an interesting culture. No matter who you are, you can’t deny Japan is a pretty kickass country! Especially in today’s world where there’s up-to-date electronics, interesting and eye-catching scenery/fashion/food, and music that will rock your world! (Regardless if you know what they’re saying or not). Before you start screaming “Wapanese” again, hear me out. Some people obsess with Ireland, England, Mexico, Africa, and other countries.. Even if they’re not from there or have heritage from there. They learn all about the place and maybe even learn the language hard (if not half-heartedly) so they know a little bit for when they visit. Does this make them Engenese? Mexenese? Or whatever other form of “Wapanese” there is? Why not hit these people as well instead of just the ones into Japan? Isn’t that kinda like a hate crime otherwise?

Okay, now that I covered the three biggest parts of being “Wapanese”, here’s a list of aspects the usual “Wapanese” possess. I’ll put why the items on the list doesn’t mean they’re “Wapanese” to the right.

1. They worship at the feet of the goddess Ayumi Hamasaki and pray for her to deliver them to the promised land of the rising sun. Okay, I don’t know who that is, and it might be a bit overboard, but it’s not bad to daydream and wish something magical from one of your animes or god studies could come and whisk you off to a dream world/land. (Everyone daydreams about something different).

2. Has an unhealthy obsession with anime, particularly anime intended for a young audience (see Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and Yu-Gi-Oh!). They also live under the belief that all Western animation is garbage and every piece of it, from Steamboat Willie to The Incredibles was copied from some obscure anime only 3 (or possibly less) people saw. Please read the paragraphs above.

3. Operates under the belief that every aspect of American culture is vastly inferior to that of Japan’s—even though 99.9% of Wapanese have never had firsthand experience of any sort with their preferred culture (in other words, they’ve never set so much as one foot upon the island(s) of Japan). Even though it’s kinda silly, these kind of people probably just haven’t bothered to learn much about their own country and realize even though it’s not grand, it’s no better or worse than Japan.. Or any other country for that matter.

4. Halfheartedly studies Japanese language and/or is a part-time practitioner of martial arts. For "practitioner," read "watcher of TV," as both are essentially the same to the Wapanese in this case. People who do this probably just want to learn a little of the language or study martial arts just to know it! Maybe for when they go to Japan and want to know where the restroom is or to say “Thank you”. Or for martial arts, they just want to feel like they have a small bit of self-defense.

5. Repeatedly tries to mix Japanese words in English speech or use "Engrish" to sound either cute or funny, but comes off as an annoying asshole praying to get his or her ass kicked. This I agree is annoying as hell sometimes, but some people are just trying to remember these words or are trying to show whoever they’re speaking with that they know it. (Or even using it as ‘code’. Me and a friend or two back in High School use to do that so others around us wouldn’t know what we were saying. (How many people in High School know even a word of Japanese besides “Sushi“?)

6. Has a sword (samurai swords only, of course). Samurai swords are interestingly shaped and very easy to control compared to certain swords.. I don’t think it’s odd for someone to have just that (if they’re not into medieval or whatever other swords hold/shape)

7. Is a virgin. ..okay, this is just plain not true! I’ve know quite a few people in my time who was anime obsessed, Japan lover, and everything else, and was surely no virgin!

8. May be afflicted with a terminal case of yellow fever; however, they constantly fail in their quest for Japanese poontang. Asians (Japanese included) tend to have softly shaped bodies and adorable faces.. who wouldn’t want a piece of that?

9. Wears an anime costume (known as cosplay) on any time other than Halloween. I also recall people doing dress up as a young age or even now-a-days at many different types of conventions. It’s just to escape your everyday life and be that blue-haired chick or the guy you watch on TV. Also, don’t people kinda do that too when they see their favorite celebrity but to an extreme? Dressing, talking, eating, and doing drugs like them? I’m sorry, but that’s freaky.. dressing up like a character you like is not.

10. Has an undying hatred of all other Asian cultures, especially Chinese, Tibetans, and Koreans. This can be for a number of reasons, I can’t truly touch much of it. I’m sure no one has a ‘undying hatred’ for all other Asian cultures though. (I think this was made up)

11. Has a multitude of broken bones from repeated asskickings, most likely by LAMBCHOP (see 9). See 9.

12. Calls anyone that criticizes any aspect of Japan as "racist", even though everyone knows you can only be racist against black people. “Only be racist against black people”? I hope that was sarcasm or a joke. (That’s all I have to say to that.. You should know this number was retarded, haha).

Okay, I’ve covered the top three “Wapanese” aspects and even went down a list and explained why the “Wapanese” word is a thing of myth. Non-existent. So next time you set out to call someone such a word, remember you’re just blowing hot air while trying to feel ‘smart and superior’.

Peace, I’m out.

~Joy

P.S. I don't care if you thought this was retarded. I did it because I wanted to get it out and I'm too stubborn to go to bed right now. ♥

NOTE: I'm going to try and not reply to every comment posted here unless I need to say something 'important'. haha.

current mood: accomplished

I may cosplay but I'm no Wapanese XD

I would NEVER want to live in Japan. I'd much rather visit Ireland or England then that place : /

I'd much rather learn German then Japanese. Not everyone who watches these cartoons wants to learn the language...that is just stupid.

I do like a handful of anime but most of it I don't care for. I'd much rather watch The Lion King...

I've run into some younger girls at cons who act like this in a way...but once you mention some American cartoons the conversation shifts entirely to all the ones they like. I guess people don't need to talk much about a show most people in their own country have seen...

You know...if companies like Disney and Nick hadn't slowly degraded themselves people might not be so inclined to look to anime : /

When I think of someone who is Wapanese, I kind of think of someone like this, but it's more like someone's who's a really annoying fangirl/guy, like someone who thinks they're a walking encyclopedia of Japan when really all they've done is watch a few anime, read Kamikaze Girls, and write bad fanfiction with random Japanese sprinkled in it. ...some of these I do, but not as extreme as it sounds...but when people say they want to go to Japan, live there, start a business, etc without even trying to learn the language or culture (and by culture, I mean more than the bowing and sitting at a low table that is common anime knowledge) it kind of bugs me...I dunno XD
But nowadays, a lot of western animation -is- garbage. It's not the actual animation, usually, but their pathetic excuses for plots and their slow corrupting of children (cursing in kid's shows, etc.)
Okay, but that last one is just stupid. XDD

Aaaand this made no sense. XD
